Pilgrim's Mass

This is the traditional mass given at noon everyday and it was truly moving with all the elaborate pomp and ceremony that you would expect.  There were spaces for nearly 1000 pilgrims and every space was filled so thank goodness for monitors that allowed a good view of the ceremonies. The swinging of the incense burner was of course the most spectacular part and extremely hard to photograph...so here are our best attempts.  The original practice of the incense burner was actually to fumigate the room filled with the odor of the traveling pilgrims and has just continued as a tradition.  At least we hope that's not  the reason for today's performance.  The gold altar was beyond description and not well portrayed in our photos.  We felt so fortunate to witness this in person.
