We decided to veer far from the maddening crowd and took an optional route
that would take us to a little village where there was a “wonderfully restored”
alburgue. Of course, we arrived to find
that it was no longer open. After intense
consultation with a young man on a bike, we were told of another alburgue
further on this extremely steep calle.
It was hilarious as the whole town must have known of our plight and
were hanging out their second floor windows shouting directions and
encouragement to us every step of the way. Well worth the climb. A beautiful home which the owners had
converted part into a B&B. We were
the only guests and we got the royal treatment.
A three course dinner of salad, veal and ice cream cake, plus wine of
course and a wonderful breakfast of juice, eggs, toast, muffins and coffee. The
owner of the B&B is also the President of the grape growers/wine makers association and the wine I had was from his own label and
excellent. This village no matter how
remote is extremely prosperous from the vineyards and every home was new or
restored and new cars everywhere.
